Where Does The Money Go? We Fund Medical Research!
Raising Hope For A Cure is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization. Our primary annual fundraisers are the Hops For Hope fundraiser and the Walkin' For Whitey memorial walk.
Every dollar you give in our fundraisers (after expenses) is donated to medical research that is sponsored by The ALS Association (www.als.org) and The Association for FTD (www.theaftd.org). Our donations are designated as "restricted funds" that can only be used for medical research -- restricted funds will not be used for other general expenses at those organizations.
A "bonus": In the last couple of years, we've been invited to review proposed research projects and donate to those projects that best match our mission. As a result we've designated a portion of our funds to those projects that target the underlying disorders found in both ALS or FTD. Read about some exciting examples, below ...
We Directly Fund Promising Medical Research Projects
Your generous contributions to Hops For Hope and Walkin' For Whitey are directly funding promising research studies that are investigating how to control a specialized protein in nerve cells, called TDP-43, that is believed to play a part in both ALS and FTD.
Here are two leading researchers whom we have been able to help with direct funding from Hops For Hope / Walkin' For Whitey:
Medical researcher Dr. Kevin Rhine is testing hundreds of drug compounds on aged nerve cells to see if any of the drugs can cause "mis-located" TDP-43 protein to re-locate back where it is supposed to be, which in turn might slow, stop, or reverse progression of nerve cell degeneration.

Neuroscientist Dr. Nikole Zuniga Quiroz is leading a research project to develop a new gene therapy that is designed to target the toxic TDP-43 aggregates that cause nerve cell degeneration in cases of ALS and FTD, without interfering with normal TDP-43 proteins.
